Denim Guide โ€” Which Fit for Which Body

Skinny, wide, bootcut, straight โ€” all different

People keep saying skinny is dead and wide is in, but the real answer is "the fit your body works with."

Fits explained

Skinny โ€” tight all the way down. Suits lean frames, stretches the leg with boots. Downside: dated.

Straight โ€” even leg width. Universally flattering, safest pick. 90s vibe.

Bootcut โ€” slight flare below the knee. Balances bigger hips. 70s retro.

Wide โ€” full leg. Trendy but can shorten you visually. High-waist saves it.

Baggy โ€” roomy through hip and thigh, tapered at the ankle. Active, casual.

Length matters

Skinny: just above the ankle. Wide: long enough to brush the heel. Straight: kissing the foot. If hemming feels intimidating, a cuff works too.

Color

Dark indigo can pass at semi-formal events. Light wash is casual only. Black denim is the everyday workhorse โ€” but fading turns it shabby, so protect the color.

Washing

First wash: alone, cold water โ€” new denim bleeds. Wash too often and color goes. Air it in sunlight after each wear and save the wash for actual dirt.

Styling Points

1

Narrow to 1-2 fits that suit your body

2

Get the length right (hem or cuff)

3

Separate by use (indigo=semi-formal, black=daily, light=casual)

4

Wash less to keep the color

Pros

  • Pairs with almost any top
  • Looks better with age (fading)
  • Year-round

Cons

  • Wrong fit looks awkward
  • Heavy and hot in summer
