Layering Basics โ€” Warm and Sharp

The trick to layering: not looking bulky

Layering is the most useful styling for transitional seasons and winter. Done wrong, you look like you put on every piece you own.

Three things matter: length difference, weight difference, tone consistency.

Length difference

The inner piece should peek out slightly below the outer one. A tee 1-2cm longer than the shirt over it reads as intentional.

Reverse works too โ€” short cardigan over a long shirt, with the shirt tail showing.

Weight difference

Two pieces of similar thickness layered feels suffocating. Thin tee + mid-weight shirt + heavy coat โ€” that gradient is the point.

Tone harmony (or sharp contrast)

Safe route: stay tonal. Beige + camel + ivory. Other route: hard contrast. White tee + navy shirt + black coat.

Mid-saturation colors mixed together look muddy. Pick a side.

What doesn't work

Bulky knit under bulky denim jacket. You double up on volume. One of them needs to be thin.

Styling Points

1

Build from thin inside to heavy outside

2

Vary lengths by 1-3cm

3

Stay tonal or go contrast โ€” skip the middle

4

Check the side profile in the mirror โ€” bulk shows from the side

Pros

  • Easy temperature adjustment

Cons

  • Done wrong, you look bulky
